inToday’s post is in honor of Daddy, the human jungle gym…
…Who has lightning-fast reflexes…
…And can absorb an attack on two fronts while overseeing a safe descent at the same time.
He puts those slippers on as soon as he gets home, but they don’t see much lounging. Three small heads are full of other plans for him!

inA couple of fun, silly shots with my boys today:
C surprised me by volunteering to smile “reeeeally big” for the camera. He meant it.
Despite having my fair share of Irish blood, and choosing Irish/English as the theme for our children’s names, I completely failed to dress anyone in green today. I have also finally admitted to myself that I don’t like corned beef and cabbage. Don’t tell my dear Grandma. I did make a new beef stew recipe tonight–that’s sort of in the Irish tradition, right?
However, my husband inadvertently wore green today, and just so happened to go to an Irish restaurant for lunch. So maybe we’re covered.
I had ambitions of doing a little decorating around the house for each holiday this year. But since my Valentine’s Day decorations are still up, it looks like I’ll be redirecting those (small) energies toward Easter.
However, it was balmy outside, we played in the yard with friends, took cheesy pictures together, and ate our nice hearty stew. We discovered that E loves beef stew with mushrooms, and hates mashed potatoes and broccoli. Good to know.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

inLook who’s walking everywhere:
And she’s off!
Wait. Am I really doing it?
Temporary setback.
I’ve got this now.
Enjoying a sunny spot.
She is quite tickled with her accomplishments.
As she says, approvingly: “Guh gih! Guh gih!” (Good girl!)
She is fifteen months old today–still tiny, but awfully grown up. And she has a great deal to say about everything. Yesterday J and I counted at least 25 words that she says reliably–some umprompted, and some echoing us. Some of the newer additions to the list: “Gank you!” (Thank you); “Ah-sigh! Ah-sigh!” (Outside); “Baa” (Bath); “Booh” (Book); “Shooooze” (Shoes); “Kay!” (Okay); “Nigh-igh” (Night-night); and “Gaah-guh” (Cracker). Her happy crowings and jabberings fill our house.
On the other hand, today we visited with a friend whom E has not seen very often; to my surprise, my little firecracker scuttled silently behind my legs, her little arms twined around my knees and her wide eyes peeking cautiously around me.
She’s still my little baby: I call those shy hugs and this string of drool to witness.

inIn the midst of the clamor that fills our house, there are the sweet, simple, daily routines that I want to treasure up in my heart–like this one: waking E up from her morning nap.
Fast asleep in her bed.
Stirring and blinking.
Strrrrrrretch.
Hey, world! I’m up!
Oh, wow.
Maybe I’m not quite as bushy-tailed as I thought.
What were we doing here?
Oh, yes. Food.
Revived!
So what’s going on out there?
Got any fun plans, Mama?
Hold on.
All right. I’m okay. I think. How’s my hair?
Oh, hello there!
She rejoins the fray.
Sometimes, when I’m scrambling to get jabbering little people out the door for a walk before naptime; or starting another load of laundry at ten p.m. because there are NO clean pajamas for tomorrow and we’ve used up all the sweatpants in the preceding no-clean-pajama nights; or dashing around the kitchen loading the dishwasher while keeping one eye on my daughter and her aspirations of scaling the stairs–sometimes I worry that I will rush through these moments and not remember them when they are gone. I worry that I will wake up one morning and my house will be quiet, my floors will be clean, my family room will not be decorated with toy pots and pans, my counters will not be occupied by elaborate Lincoln Log residences, my laundry will be ALL DONE (!), and I will wish I had these days back. When that day comes, I want to have these memories to hand, in pictures and in words, because this over-tired brain can’t hold them all. I can’t even remember what I did yesterday. That was a long time ago. But there are things here that I want to remember–in both the clamor and the calm.
The pictures above were inspired by one of my favorite bloggers, Ashley Ann of Under the Sycamore, who takes breathtaking pictures of her everyday life with her children. Unlike me, she truly knows her way around a camera. I gaze wistfully at her images, and dream of a camera a little more like that. But in the meantime, I want to use my humbler camera and the odd available moments to record more of what I see around me every day, tramping through my kitchen and spilling juice across my table and wetting the sheets, again.
I’m tired, but it’s so good, this life.

inWalking with my girl: this child absolutely loves to be outside. As soon as I mention the word, she chirps, “Ow-diye! Ow-diye!” and will go to the coat closet, pull out her pink cowgirl boots, and attempt to put them on, yelping for help. When I produce her pink mittens, she tries to put them on. She is an adorable little spitfire all day long–but when she is outside or fully dressed for it and just waiting by the door, she is perfectly calm. I think we will be living outdoors this summer.
